Tanjung Bungah Night Market (Part 1)

Welcome to my first gastronomic post!

This week, I will be featuring one of the must-eat places at Tanjung Bungah. Widely known as one of the most happening food destinations in northern Penang, the Tanjung Bungah Night Market is open on Tuesdays. Visitors can usually flock to the venue at 5.30 pm. The night market usually ends by 10.30 pm.

This night market is located at the same venue as Tanjung Bungah's morning market. If you are coming from town, KCChiak advises you to practise the "art of tailing" the 101 and 102 Rapid buses until you reach the night market; the market is located directly next to a Rapid hub. Here is the location:

Now that we have covered the basics, let's talk about the FOOD! Here are some of my personal recommendations on what your taste buds should lust for during your visit:

1) Nasi Ulam

The Nasi Ulam (Herb Rice Salad) here is one of the main attractions. The mixture of the various herbs, roasted peanuts, onions, cucumber, rice, and serunding (spiced grated coconut with krill) makes this dish an appetising delight. In addition, the spicy home-made sambal (chilli relish) adds a wonderful kick. If you are searching for something fragrant and healthy, give this dish a try!

 2) De Bunny's Pork Mantou (*Ceased Operations*)

De Bunny's Pork Mantou (Chinese steamed bun) is one of the latest additions to the night market. The soft and fluffy bun, as well as its sweet pork filling, complement each other perfectly to give you a truly savoury taste. KCChiak recommends that you order the affordable pork mantou set that comes with a huge piece of juicy fried drumstick and fries! Be sure to get your "order number" from the stall owners when you place your order.

 3) Aiyu Jelly

Aiyu Jelly (aka Ice Jelly), or better known as O Geo, is a popular dessert among Singaporeans. This sweet and tangy dessert uses a special type of fig jelly that has a smoother texture than normal jelly. Served with lemon juice, longan (fruit), lychee (fruit), atap chee (Nipah palm seeds), Nata de coco, and peach, the refreshing aiyu jelly is a must-eat among dessert lovers after a long walk around the night market.
